While a four-door sports car may be frowned upon by purists, Mercedes-AMG’s recent concept celebrating AMG’s 50th anniversary has taken on the challenge of redeeming the potential hiding in the design.

Revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the concept car is based on the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, a model quickly growing in fame in its own right. With two more doors added, though, it looks like a family or staff car with a serious attitude problem. But, it incorporates a hybrid powertrain, too, so it’ll have a clear conscience.

Currently, it is being called the AMG GT Concept, but reports indicate AMG might call the eco-friendly four-door the ‘GT4.’ Mercedes confirmed that it will be a production model, but didn’t indicate when production might begin, let alone when the model might be seen on sales floors.

The tentatively-named GT4 offers a number of forward-thinking tech on, in, and under its hood. One cool feature is the addition of Nano Active Fiber Technology lights, which use tubular rods instead of the classic or LED lighting setups. The shutters of the wide-mouthed front end are also active, closing for aerodynamic improvements during periods of difficult driving, and opening when cool air is needed in the engine.

The GT4 will be outfitted with the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 beast found in the AMG GT, and paired with an electric motor and all-wheel drive to complete the hybrid powertrain. The result will be 805 horsepower, enough to push the GT4 from stop to 60 in less than three seconds.
