Bentley Unveils the All-Electric EXP 12 Speed 6e Concept

Bentley’s unveiling of an all-electric roadster surprised many at the Geneva Motor Show. A two-seat ragtop, Bentley is calling the concept the EXP 12 Speed 6e, a variation on the EXP 10 Speed 6 revealed a couple of years ago. Bentley has been quietly working away on the vehicle, and is curious about what people think of its most current form.

The company hasn’t revealed information regarding the drivetrain design, other than to suggest that a) it will be quick, which isn’t surprising for an electric car tuned for high performance—the fact that the energy is already waiting, and does not need to be produced for acceleration, translates into mighty, mighty fleet launch times; and b) that its batteries will hold a charge stout enough to give the 6e a range of about 300 miles. That’s enough range to allow motorists to, as the company asserts, drive their all-electric Bentley from Milan to Monaco on a single charge…or from Cleveland to Detroit and back again. Recharging will be quick, maybe even Tesla quick.

Bentley sees the 6e as an unlikely EV; not only does the company have a vision for the car that loses nothing over a gas-powered Bentley, it wishes to up the ante in the luxury department. The company sees the 6e as an incredibly connected luxury vehicle, with an onboard ‘concierge service’ capable of understanding complex queries and commands customizing the journey as it develops.

And the 6e looks very good; it’s sprightly but substantial, lacks the hyper-aggressive fascia of many contemporary roadsters, looking instead like a helical spring. Its lines are soft and fluid. And, cosmetically, it’s attractive, with copper accents a pleasing shift toward traditional ragtop motoring, and away from the chilly look of brushed aluminum and polished carbon fiber currently in vogue for this level of auto manufacturing.

For now, though, enthusiasts interested in checking out a Bentley EV will have to console themselves with the Bentayga hybrid, due on sales floors next year.
