Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix have listed their cooperatively co-owned co-op loft in Soho. The duo is asking $3.895 million for the property, which is situated in 477 Washington/533 Canal, a historic industrial building much admired by the well-heeled set nostalgic for the gritty Village of yesteryear. Whether you regard the address as 477 Washington or 533 Canal reveals much about where your sympathies reside re the Village of today. But it’s the same place, either way.
The eight story building dates to 1911, and contains eight units. The lofts are large and bright, most featuring surveys of city and river.
The Affleck and Phoenix loft measures about 2,400 square feet, and contains two bedrooms and three baths. It’s not a flashy loft, and has retained much of its original spirit: raw concrete or flat-finished hardwood floors, exposed brick, industrial lighting, 11-foot ceilings. Subway tile and track lighting add to the effect and, though the kitchen brings commercial-glam appliances into the picture, the gaping open space all but swallows up any lesser attempts to interrupt the veneer-less utilitarian atmosphere.
The apartment is comprised of two units, and contains an upstairs master suite with a walk-in closet and discrete office space. The downstairs bedroom is sparer still; there is an additional ‘sleeping area’ outlined in the floor plan, a guest crash corner incorporated into the massive open concept common space.
The property, which extends from a main living space on the 7th floor to the master suite on the floor above, has been on and off the market for about a year.
Affleck and Phoenix collaborated on ‘I’m Still Here.’ The pair has reportedly working on an adaptation of Robert Olmstead’s novel ‘Far Bright Star,’ which is due to be released next year.
Joaquin Phoenix introduced Affleck to his youngest sibling, Summer, in 2000. The pair married in 2006 and separated in 2016.
