Porsche unveiled its newest street-legal racer at the Geneva Motor Show. The 2018 911 GT3 follows in the tradition of the hybridized track/road production cars.
But the 2018 model does raise the ante with a more powerful engine design derived from Porsche racers 911 RSR and GT3 R. And it features an optional six-speed H-pattern manual transmission to go with it, bringing an old-school element of sportscar fun back into the picture: a more direct connection between driver and mechanics. The standard dual-clutch automatic transmission is quicker, and may deliver a little more adrenaline to your bloodstream, but the manual is more interesting. It’s nice to have the choice. Pick your gearbox.
The engine is a 4.0L naturally aspirated six cylinder; it produces 500HP and will take the new 911 GT3 to 62MPH in 3.4 seconds as an automatic, or 3.9 seconds as a manual transmission car. The GT3 top speed is 197MPH.
Design changes to the facelift include larger air dams for improved airflow. The aerodynamics have also been improved, for substantially better down force than the previous model; again, similar to the RS racer.
Rear wheel will be standard with the 2018 GT3. It will also contain no back seats—this is a track car, after all—but it will be delivered with a cutting-edge infotainment system. Other track-style options include manual seat adjustment, and carbon fiber and plastic bucket seats for the full experience.
The 2018 911 GT3 will reach U.S. dealers later this year, and will price out in the neighborhood of $150K.
