Evan Metropoulos, son of Metropoulos & Co. founder Dean Metropoulos, has purchased the Danny Thomas estate in Beverly Hills. In doing so, he follows the iconic estate-buying example of his brother Daren, who bought the Playboy mansion last year for $100 million. The Thomas estate had been initially listed in 2015 at $135 million, but the final selling price was $65 million.
Measuring about 18,000 square feet, and sprawling along a 2.5 acre lot, the home is designed for entertaining, with expansive second floor terrace, second floor loggia, attached gazebo, formal dining room with domed ceiling, and salon with lounge and bar. Outdoor flooring is tiled in offset gold and neutral-toned marble, and there are dramatic views of Los Angeles from virtually any position on the property.
The interior is a pretty wild blend of baroque, gothic and Italian renaissance elements, with gild moldings, ornate marble and bronze staircase newels, marble columns with ionic hardwood accents, wrought-iron balustrades, hand-painted frescoes, carved wood details, and more columns. The foyer sets the tone with Baccarat chandelier, marble, plaster moldings, and ornate bronze and iron details, including statuette newel finials. Thomas clearly loved the place, and must have enjoyed the process of creating it. The home was constructed in the 1970’s.
The home was sold by the Thomas family in 2000, for $15 million. Its new owners renovated it extensively in the 2000’s.
