Metallica Guitarist Kirk Hammett Lists San Francisco Home for $16M

When it comes to architecture, Kirk Hammett seems to gravitate toward the formal and ornate, at least in façade. Maybe it’s the classical embedded deeply in Metallica’s music. This mansion in San Francisco has been his home for about a decade, and he’s listed it for $16 million.

Looking like it was transplanted directly from Venice, the stucco structure with neoclassical mannerisms dates to 1922. It measures 4,180 square feet, and contains four bedrooms and 4.5 baths. The lot size is compact, measuring only 2,600 additional square feet, so the property comes down to house, shards of lawn, and spectacular Pacific and Marin views.

Inside, the home is pretty understated, with a lot of clean lines, and little ornamentation outside the tile of the foyer and kitchen, which looks Spanish in design. The crown moldings are tasteful, and fireplaces are simple and functional. Bay windows, skylights and French doors lend accents of illumination and clarity to the design, and extensive warm-toned hardwood prevents the atmosphere from cooling down too much. The interior has been remodeled, and in places looks modernist in spirit.

Bathrooms are similarly tasteful, with subway tile, and a refreshing lack of marble, marble, marble; although one bathroom, entirely in green, might seem a little heavy-handed, the fact that it’s clearly been left as-is for a long period of time contributes to the home’s bohemian insouciance. Views from the enclosed porch and front garden are nearly worth the price of admission on their own.

Supremely talented guitarist Hammett joined Metallica in the early 1980’s. The band’s most recent release is 2016’s ‘Hardwired…to Self-Destruct.’ We hope they’re not entirely correct on that score.
