It’s not often you see a basketball court in a townhouse, but the UWS home Bob Weinstein has listed for sale has one as a fifth floor.
The rest of the brownstone home, however, has been carefully restored to its historical significance. Constructed in 1910, the property has seen its top-to-bottom oak staircase returned to its former glory. Reclaimed or period correct wood grace every floor—including the fifth floor gym and basketball court—and reclaimed fixtures have been used to accent doors and moldings.
The home measures 6,600 square feet, and contains five bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and three half baths throughout its five floors of living space. The five wood-burning fireplaces have been converted to gas, but have either retained, or been restored to, their original luster.
The oak cabinetry in the kitchen is a nice example of the aesthetic qualities which brought the home into its current iteration: subdued but highly figured, the flat-finished wood is substantial but unpretentious, a real attempt to instill within the home a sense of the UWS during the period of its construction.
The home’s elevator only runs from the garden to the third floor; fourth and fifth floors are only accessible manually, part of the building’s charm. The garden level contains a recreation room, and egress to the back patio. The third floor contains the master suite, with the remaining bedrooms on the fourth and fifth floors. The rooftop deck has been finished in cedar and slate.
Weinstein and his ex-wife, Annie Clayton, purchased the property by word-of-mouth in 2009, for $15 million. Weinstein had always wanted a brownstone.
Among the Weinstein Company’s latest projects are the television series ‘Scream’; they will be distributing this year’s ‘Tulip Fever,’ set to open later this month. Written by Tom Stoppard, the film stars Christoph Waltz and Alicia Vikander.
