A former executive for fashion company Esprit has listed a Plaza condo for sale, and it’s a honey. John F. Kennedy hung his hat here occasionally, when it was the Plaza Hotel, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor preferred it to other suites, too.
Current owner Jurgen Friedrich, who was with Esprit for over two decades, recently listed the 4,284 square foot residence—known as the Astor Suite during the Plaza’s reign, and considered the finest suite in the hotel—for $39.5 million. Friedrich purchased the property in 2007, for $25 million.
The same architect commissioned to restore Windsor Castle was hired to transform the generous hotel room into a permanent home. There are 3 bedrooms and 5.5 baths throughout the living space. Ceilings throughout are a liberating fourteen feet.
The updating was artfully completed, and retains the spirit of the historic hotel, offering modern amenities and subtly traditional hand-craftsmanship: hand-drawn ceilings, English oak paneling and coffering, antique fireplace mantles, and walls dressed in hand-hammered leather. Modern touches include a state-of-the-art climate system with humidifier, and integrated temperature, music, lighting and television e-control accessible through tablet or smartphone.
The fifth-floor corner apartment is L-shaped, with views of Fifth Avenue to the east, and views of Central Park along the northern exposure. The master suite located on one end of the layout, buffered by the library.
An adjacent unit—with about one-quarter the square footage—is also available, at $4.79 million.
