A Malibu two-story home formerly owned by late actor Carroll O’Connor and his late wife Nancy was recently listed. The current ask is $29.5 million. The property’s previous sale price was about $13.3 million, when it changed owners in 2007.
The residence, which was constructed in 1953, is a rambling and somewhat shambling structure measuring 4,250 square feet, and containing four bedrooms and four baths. It incorporates a large, beachfront deck, pergola, and an expansive but currently overgrown garden at the center of the property.
The home is not staged, perhaps indicating its current state of repair, and where the real value of the property lies; a tear-down is likely after the sale has been completed. As a result, zoned plans for a 10,000 square foot new construction are included with the sale, and the drafted house-to-be is an imposing open-concept contemporary-style with sauna, offices, home fitness center. The new construction would contain five bedrooms and 7.5 baths, including a master suite with fireplace and private beachfront balcony.
Carroll O’Connor died in 2001. He had appeared as the controversial character Archie Bunker for thirteen seasons of ‘All in the Family’ and its spinoff, ‘Archie Bunker’s Place’ on CBS; he later played Chief Gillespie in the late 80’s/early 90’s dramatic NBC-to-CBS series ‘In The Heat of the Night,’ further developing the role played by Rod Steiger in the classic Norman Jewison-directed film.
