Porsche recently unveiled its new 911 GTS line. Featuring updates to exterior, interior and mechanics, the 2017 GTS models are designed for continuing sales competition with BMW’s M6 and Mercedes-AMG’s GT.
Notable updates include the new 3.0L dual-turbo, straight six-cylinder engine that produces 450HP and will take the Coupe model from a standstill to 62MPH in a snappy 3.6 seconds. Porsche’s Doppelkupplung seven-speed transmission—a dual-clutch design known as the ‘PDK’—takes some credit for the quick response; the PDK is essentially two transmissions in one, each controlling alternate speeds. The upshot is dramatically increased response time. But the significant emission reduction offered by the design also indicates greater fuel efficiency; taking less time to accelerate means, perhaps, that the 911 GTS models use a little less gas.
Additionally, Porsche’s ‘PASM,’ or Active Suspension Management system, moves into or out of a more rigid sport mode, by increasing or decreasing suspension dampening, for greater performance at higher speeds and/or during more challenging conditions. Always in operation, PASM can be manually operated, at the push of a button, for more immediate and dramatic compensation. The PASM system allows the GTS sits about 10mm lower to the ground. A front spoiler lip, and more effective rear spoiler, increase downforce.
The five Targa and Carrera model variations include tinted tail lights, gloss exhaust pipes, and satin-finished 20” wheels. Interiors are outfitted with Alcantara and leather, brushed aluminum trim, the Sport Chrono package, a new SportDesign front splitter, and the Porsche Track Precision App for transfer of telemetry data to smartphones.
Prices for models GTS, 4 GTS, GTS Cabrio, 4 GTS Cabrio and Targa 4 GTS start at around $120K.
