Yankees legend Derek Jeter rented this West Village townhouse, which dates to 1833, for a short time in 2015; now the home’s owner might be cashing in on the cachet.
The townhouse at 56 Bank Street had been on and off the market for about six years; wishing to put a little reverse-psychology whammy on potential buyers, the owner had gradually increased the price over the property’s market life, a marked departure from standard procedure. Hoping for value by celebrity association, the Jeter connection saw the listing raised to $7.495 million. The listing wasn’t shy about mentioning A-Rod as a tentant, either. But, finally, it seems the property is under contract.
The building’s neoclassical brick façade indicates the interior design sensibilities; although renovated, the spirit of the home’s substantial, unadorned hardwood and brick predominates. The floors are mid-toned and, with the dark cabinetry and exposed brick, the feel is old-school New York warmth—on the edge of overload—although the new steel staircase with stone steps and cherry rail lends the home a bit of contemporary detachment. Twelve-foot ceilings are pleasantly expansive.
The home spans four levels and an unused rooftop. The kitchen and dining room on the second level is open and bright; the master suite is on the fourth level, and features a large bathroom with marble tile, and a good amount of closet space—although in that same dark-toned cabinet wood that saps light from the room. All together, the home is fairly compact, with two bedrooms and two baths, and a total of 2,800 square feet of living space. The first level garden and 19’ by 29’ rooftop offer a little room to stretch out.
After Jeter’s exit, the home rented to a Yankees fan with $23K a month in disposable income before going under contract to someone—perhaps a Yankees fan—with considerably more.
