Cate Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton have found a buyer for their Australian estate, ‘Bulwarra.’ The property has been on the market since 2015. The couple purchased the home in 2005 for $10 million, and pumped nearly that much into it again over a long renovation period during their first years of ownership.
The original sandstone structure dates to 1877; the renovation leaves it a mix of contemporary and more traditional styles: the façade shifts dramatically from plantation-style to modernist pavilion. The interior is very contemporary, with poured concrete walls and columns, whitewash, planar lines, and metallic surfaces joining hardwood floors and exterior walls for a blend of raw and naturalistic influences.
The steel staircase at the center of the home is the most striking feature of the renovation. Spanning all three floors, and airily contained by vertical steel rods that offset the steps and compliment them in the process, it is a delight to look at, and grounds the historical and more contemporary design elements of the home nicely.
The master bedroom features a large dressing room with skylight, and an automatic staircase leading to an auxiliary dressing room. The master suite is nestled in its own wing of the re-design.
A terrace overlooks the Lane Cove River, which may be accessed directly from the property. The pool and lounge area, which also looks out over the river and cityscape, rests at the edge of the landscaped acre of land.
Cate Blanchett has won two academy awards, for 2004’s ‘The Aviator,’ and 2013’s ‘Blue Jasmine.’ She has won numerous other film and dramatic arts awards.
Andrew Upton is a playwright and director. Along with Blanchett, he founded production company Dirty Films.
