Pete and Bridgette Sampras recently sold this appealing Brentwood home. The couple netted $7.25M, a bit under the $7.9M listing price, but considerably over the $5.9 million the couple paid for the property in 2009.

Nestled on about half an acre of densely wooded grounds, the cottage-style house measures 6,900 square feet, and contains six bedrooms and 6.5 baths, including upper and lower floor master suites, but the cozy design and location renders it uniquely private and peaceful.

The home features a home theater and wine cellar, but the informality of the cosmetic touches are the most charming aspects of the house. Shiplap, vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, and the use of slate as a continuing motif distinguish the build, and give it an aura of artisanal consequence: the pool and patio/grille area is finished in stone, as are the walkways around the house; stacked slate embellishes exterior retaining walls, and is used to enhance foundational pillars. The stacked-slate fireplace is an interior reprise, providing an overall sense of balance.

Dark wood is used judiciously outside and inside, a little weight to offset the abundant glass and raised ceilings. Medium-toned hardwood floors add additional eye appeal, and a little complexity. Overall, the design is nicely sustained, and pleasingly asymmetrical.

Pete Sampras, a tennis racketeer known as Pistol Pete for his bullet serve and forehand, is one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, perhaps the greatest.
