Mark Morgan, a composer and one-time member of the pop group ‘Starship,’ recently sold this contemporary in Malibu. The selling price of the home was $4.1 million.

A concrete, steel and glass design with heavy industrial overtones, the interior of the house is bright and warm, with lots of polished wood, and plenty of space as the main living area extends to three tiers. Alternating partitions and open gateways, instead of walls, lead up to the kitchen area at the back of the space. From the upper tiers, the home’s interior blends effortlessly with the view of wooded land sloping down to the Pacific. The kitchen cabinetry is finished in teak, matching the floors and beams; the motif of wood grain is never out of sight for very long. Starkly modern fireplaces balance things nicely.

The 4,872 square foot house—and attached guest house, which was in use as a recording studio— contains three bedrooms and three baths. The master suite features stunning views of Zuma beach, and the master bath’s hardwood is a welcome change to the stone and tile standard we’ve come to expect in a nicer home. Ceilings are uniformly high, and, together with all the glass, offer a great deal of breathing room.

The property exterior features a multi-level terrace, and patio with fireplace, barbecue and dining area. The grounds are limited, but nicely landscaped with desert flora.

It’s no surprise Mark Morgan liked the location; he loves to surf. After a 1988-1990 stint with hit band ‘Starship’—which was very distantly related to 60’s psychedelic rock San Francisco outfit ‘Jefferson Starship’—he became a composer for films, television, and video games, work in which he continues to enjoy success.
