Legendary actor Burt Lancaster’s home of twenty years has come up for sale.
Located in the Century Towers building, the condominium is comprised of two original units, and measures 2,800 square feet. It contains a master suite, an additional bedroom and 1.5 baths, and open living, kitchen, dining and lounge space.
Interestingly, Lancaster had the condo designed in the Spanish style, with terra-cotta tile, soft, rounded arches, columns, stucco walls, and a bit of wrought iron. Whitewash and fundamental earth tones prevail. Windows use tile and arches to frame the cityscape, viewing it through the lens of the design artifice. Exposed beams and ceiling trellis, strictly ornamental, help to support the illusion of desert country house. For a condominium design, it is unique, and fairly effective at promoting a feeling of relaxing comfort.
Lancaster bought the 18th-floor units and had them converted into a home in 1976, remaining until his death in 1994. It was sold in 1996, and changed owners again in 2001.
Burt Lancaster, an enormously influential actor, starred in a number of classic films in a variety of genres and styles. Displaying an impressive dramatic range, Lancaster was employed by a who’s who of period heavyweight directors, including John Huston, Luchino Visconti, John Frankenheimer, and Richard Brooks. He took home an Oscar for his role in Brooks’s 1960 satire ‘Elmer Gantry,’ in which he played the titular character, a uniquely American con artist selling faith and fervor for a fast buck.
