Composer Atli Orvarrson has sold this modern home in Mar Vista.
A classic example of mid-century Bauhaus-inspired modernist architecture, the house’s design is wonderfully asymmetrical, and without ornamental distraction; whitewash, glass, and hard angles prevail. It certainly boasts the stark and slightly arrogant beauty of avant-garde residential architecture of the postwar period. Even the swimming pool arises out of a utilitarian sensibility—a modern build of 1948, yes, but also a Southern California home.
The living space measures 4,558 square feet, and contains five bedrooms and five and a half baths, including a master suite. There is the characteristic sense of openness from room to room within, and from indoor to outdoor; on the first floor, the living room moves to kitchen and beyond in a natural progression consecrated by architectural artifice, while on the second, floor-to-ceiling corner windows and glass doors open from master bedroom and bath onto a deck overlooking the pool. The master suite features a sitting area, large walk-in closet, the master bath a double shower and soaking tub.
The exterior of the property continues the pattern, and anti-pattern, established by the house, with geometric figures plotted, intersecting, and merging into an abstract representation of balance within the natural world.
Mr. Orvarsson purchased this striking home in 2014, reportedly for $3.1 million. He sold it to an unnamed buyer for $3.69 million.
