Ferrari Special Projects J50, Limited to 10 $2.5M Examples, Unveiled in Japan

Ferrari recently unveiled this lovely and extremely limited offering in Japan.

Called the J50—representing 50 years of business in the Land of the Rising Sun—the roadster’s design is evocative of 1980’s models, although the hard lines of the that era’s offerings are softened considerably with the more contemporary Barchetta-revival design elements that have become familiar to the brand’s newer devotees; both the classic F40 and 488 Spider are voiced in the overall look, although the lines are more steeply ‘dramatic,’ giving the car tournament appeal. It is a roadster, but a T-top, with a 2-piece carbon-fiber roof panel that may be removed as desired. The model has been carefully developed to resonate both as a nostalgic symbol and as a cutting-edge supercar, a difficult balance artfully achieved by the Special Projects department in conjunction with the Ferrari Styling Centre in Maranello.

The engine is essentially the same powerhouse which graced the 488—a 3.9L twin-turbo V8 which took the International Engine of the Year Award home to Bologna in 2016—but with a horsepower boost to 681. Mechanical features include LED headlamps, 20” forged rims, increased downforce and improved aerofoiling in contrast with the 488, and a rear diffuser inspired by the afterburner on a jet engine; cosmetics include triple-layer finish and black-on-red color combination. Each example will be available as a bespoke special order, as well.

The 10-example J50 may be already sold out, but is offered—pre-bespoke—at a little over $2.6 million.
