This summer Switzerland-based Solar Impulse and its self-named Solar Impulse 2 completed a flight around the globe using only solar power. Now fellow Swiss engineering company, SolarStratos, has machinations for its solar-powered craft that is expected to reach the edge of space.
SolarStratos recently unveiled its two-seater solar-powered plane crafted to take to the skies without using the large quantities of fuel that it would normally need to get up to space. The SolarStratos aircraft is expected to be able to reach altitudes of up to 80,000-plus feet.
With a length of almost 28 feet and a width of approximately 82 feet, the plane boasts wings swathed with solar panels to provide the juice needed to fly.
SolarStratos expects to offer a commercially available solar-powered, stratosphere-reaching plane by 2018. The current model has already faced multiple tests, including ones for electronics, heat, and stress.
Co-founder Raphael Domjan, who also is the creator of the solar-powered boat dubbed PlanetSolar, will pilot the SolarStratos plane in its initial flight.
