Gerard Way, the supremely talented singer, multi-instrumentalist, and artist, has sold his Highland Park home for $1.158 million.
The house is an unassuming mid-century standard issue, until one steps inside. The home’s 3,600 square feet are clearly an extension of Way’s creative soul. It was restored in 2014 by HabHouse, and overhauled to the tastes of Way and his wife Lyn-Z.
The interior design is eccentrically functional, with styles blending as necessary and apparently via inspiration giving the home an off-the-cuff look of a work-in-progress; charming, in other words, because of the lack of self-consciousness of its owners and co-designers. A rundown disaster at the time of purchase, Way and his wife took on the project last year, having purchased the property for $1.08 million.
The lighting has been added, presumably, around existing fixtures, giving the interior a nifty coherence through accumulation; track lighting is stacked on top of industrial lamps on top of generic sconces and what appear to be original, mid-century ceiling fixtures.
The home features six bedrooms and four baths, with a master suite. In the master bath, the design has set an assertive stone fireplace looming beside a tiled soaking tub, on top of a floor decorated in a playful geometric pattern. Exposed beams and joists indicate the stability of structural integrity. Swinging two-way doors feature porthole windows. All in all, a tonic for the artistic temperament so quickly weary of mass-produced symmetry and bland tones. The sale seems rushed, considering the amount of time and personality invested.
Gerard Way was a founding member of the band My Chemical Romance, and its guiding spirit. A pop artist, he got his start in animation, and, aside from his musical career, has created comic books, and dabbled in television and film. He is currently a solo artist, working with a backup band called The Hormones.
