Manufacture Roger Dubuis took the watch world by storm in 2013 with its before-its-time Excalibur Quatuor timepiece. Now the Geneva-based watchmaker has captivated timepiece fans again with its new $386,000 Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt MicroMelt.
The Quatuor Cobalt MicroMelt is actually the first-ever timepiece to be made from a high-quality alloy called cobalt chrome. The cobalt chrome is an alloy with a super-high strength and biocompatibility that is mainly used in the aeronautical and medical industries to make everything from turbines to artificial knee joints.
The original Quatuor was the first timepiece to ever have four balances, which all ward off the harmful effects that gravity can have on timekeeping.
Between the materials and the rare balancing, this timepiece is a completely unique piece of watchmaking history.
Powering the Quatuor Cobalt MicroMelt is the same hand-wound RD101 Quatuor movement that consists of 590 components like the original Quatuor watch. This movement comes complete with the Hallmark of Geneva and boasts a 40-hour power reserve.
Roger Dubuis will only make eight examples of the Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt MicroMelt.
