At 1500 horsepower, it had to happen sooner or later.  Make that sooner.

A spokesperson for Bugatti cited the reason why the Chiron went ditchward was human error: an inattentive driver. The Chiron has only been available for around ten months, so the scuttlebutt is that a test driver may be looking for a new job. Although it’s hard to imagine any driver of a Chiron as the least bit inattentive.

No injuries were reported in the accident, which occured in Wolfsburg, Germany, parent company Volkswagen Group’s hometown.

The Bugatti Chiron boasts an 8L, 16-cylinder engine, which will launch the car to 60MPH in a blistering 2.5 seconds; its top unlimited speed is supposedly in the neighborhood of 290, but it has not yet been officially tested. It features a carbon fiber body structure, and all wheel drive system. The company’s past limited-ed model is the Veyron, a 64-cylinder, ten-radiator monster that tops out at 253MPH, with a Super-Sport edition that—with its electronic speed limiter switched off—tops out at 268. The Veyron SS holds the current record of the fastest production car in the world. Bugatti has not dismissed the idea of an EV, but they have no interest in joining the ranks of luxe auto companies and developing their own ultra-SUV.

The modern incarnation of Bugatti Automobiles is a revival of a classic high-end automobile company, Ettore Bugatti, founded in 1909 in Alsace.  The Bugatti Royale was well known as the only car of its day that could give the supercharged Duesenberg a run for its money. The new Bugatti Co. follows the tradition of producing incredibly fast and luxurious automobiles in very limited quantities.
