This getaway in Agoura Hills offers quiet and space. It’s currently owned by Mel Gibson, and it’s just been placed on the market for $1.75 million. That’s a reasonable price for 87 acres’ worth of peace.
The cottage fits snugly in anyone’s idea of no frills; but that’s clearly a self-conscious decision to better highlight what the property itself has to offer. Mature oaks and walking trails abound. The property is located near the Holy Family Church, a private religious non-profit linked with Gibson’s foundation, and was probably intended as a spiritual retreat for acquaintances.
The 1921 cottage has been partially renovated with wood flooring, tasteful lighting, and a kitchen remodel. There is one bedroom within its 943 square feet. A concrete pavilion with stone fireplace gives the cottage a more expansive feel.
Mel Gibson was born in New York State, and spent part of his early life in Australia. He made his cinematic debut in 1979’s Aussie cult classic ‘Mad Max,’ but really had a chance to stretch out dramatically for the first time in 1981’s Peter Weir-directed ‘Gallipoli,’ a scathing examination of WW1 that extended the nihilistic themes of Kubrick’s ‘Paths of Glory.’ Beyond his appearance in the ‘Mad Max’ series, he starred in the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, acted across from Anthony Hopkins in 1984’s reworking of the tale of ‘The Bounty,’ and worked with Franco Zeffirelli in 1990’s adaptation of ‘Hamlet.’ He has directed several films, including 1995’s ‘Braveheart,’ 2006’s ‘Apocalypto,’ and 2004’s ultra-controversial ‘The Passion of the Christ.’
