Acura has debuted the future of how drivers and passengers will enjoy its cars in coming years with its new Precision Cockpit, which was unveiled at the recent 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Working off of Acura’s Precision Concept, the Precision Cockpit shows off the way Acura plans on modeling the styling and functionality of its interior and infotainment system for the upcoming models, especially autonomous ones.
The Precision Cockpit is based on three main components: electrification, automated driving, and connectivity.
The Android-based infotainment system is shown off on a 12.3-inch screen on the top of the dashboard and right in the driver’s line of sight, and it is controlled using a curved touchpad with absolute position mapping technology, meaning every spot on the touch pad corresponds to a point on the display screen.
Acura’s new system can also incorporate third-party and built-in apps and display multiple functions on the infotainment screen at one time with a split-screen function.
There is also a second 12.3-inch display behind the steering wheel in place of the usual instrument cluster, which shows what the car “sees” when it is in semiautonomous mode. Acura did this in order to help the driver better trust the semi-autonomous technology in its models.
Completing the glamorous aesthetic of the Precision Cockpit are materials such as wood, leather, and brushed metal.
Acura has said the Precision Cockpit is close to entering its upcoming generation of production models.
