Kobi, the world’s first all-season autonomous robot designed for yard work, just might make life a little easier. For most people, there already aren’t enough hours in the day, even on the week-ends; looking at the unraked or unmowed lawn, or expecting snow, can be a little demoralizing. Kobi is designed to improve your morale.

Kobi is able to navigate at speeds of up to 2 mph (3 km/h) using GPS positioning, cameras and ultrasonic sensors, which provide it with accuracy—say its designers—down to an inch. It will sense obstructions and stop if need be and, using available Wi-Fi or mobile networks, will even plan work around the weather.

The two components of Kobi are a rear base-unit—or brain—and three included, interchangeable front modules for snow-blowing, lawn-mowing, and leaf-collecting. Simply plug in and attach the correct module for the designated task, and let Kobi take care of business. It needs a bit of landscape familiarizing in order to position itself within the parameters of a lawn and garden, but that’s all. A mobile app will be available for iOS and Android, and will provide necessary instruction on where to deposit leaves and snow.

The robot can, of course, be re-configured for different properties, and the lithium-ion battery affords ranges of up to 7 ac (2 ha) when using the lawn module, up to 3 ac (1 ha) when using the leaf module and up to 0.37 ac (0.15 ha) when using the snow module. Kobi will automatically return to its docking and charging station when it’s low on energy, and in two to four hours will be ready to assist once again.

Base price is a reasonable $3,999; Kobi will be available for purchase early next year.
