When Mercedes came out with its most recent E-Class lineup it made sure to play up the news that the uber luxurious sedan would come equipped with the German brand’s driver-assistance technology.
But that doesn’t mean that the automaker has forgotten about fans who crave hitting the open road in an E-Class, which is why the new 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 will be a model dedicated to performance more than comfort.
Debuting at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show for Mercedes is the E63 and its S model sibling, with the latter coming with a Drift Mode, which indicates that it’s a whole different beast.
Powering the E63 is the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 that is featured in the AMG C63 and AMG GT models. In the new E-Class sedan, it is capable of producing 563 horsepower and 563 pound-feet of torque. The S model of the E63 boosts those numbers up to 603 hp and 627 pound-feet of torque, which makes it the most powerful E-Class model to come out of Mercedes’ German factories.
The E63 is capable of hitting 60 mph from a stop in just 3.4 seconds, with the E63 S shaving 0.1 of a second off of that time. The base model has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, while the E63 S can reach up to 186 mph.
All of this power is sent through a nine-speed, dual-clutch automated transmission, with all four wheels getting attention thanks to Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive system. The E63 S also comes with the Drift Mode, which when switched on, sends all 603 hp to the rear wheels.
Design-wise, the Mercedes-AMG E63 is only slightly different than its other E-Class siblings. The new look includes flared out wheel wells, a new front fascia, and a unique-to-the-model grille.
The AMG E63 and E63 S are set to go on sale next summer after they are shown off at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.
