Volvo’s S90 is a thought-provoking take on a luxury sedan from the Swedish company currently back on the rise after receiving a boost in financial support from its new Chinese owners.
Now the carmaker has come out with a unique take on the model with its new S90 Excellence sedan, which ditches the front passenger seat in favor of creating a more comfortable experience for the VIP in the rear passenger seat (that’s you).
The unique seating format is derived from the Lounge Console Concept that Volvo put on display last year. The front passenger seat has been swapped out in favor of a footrest and a multi-purpose station designed for work and entertainment.
In workspace mode, the console offers a fold-out table and pop-up screen for the laptop. Meanwhile, in entertainment mode, the screen switches into a video player with audio streaming through the included Bowers & Wilkins headphones. For those just wanting to kick back, the screen can be folded away, and the front section becomes a true footrest.
Volvo has also given both rear seats a lavish reclining massage setup. In addition, there’s a drinks cooler and storage for crystal champagne glasses.
For those who are going to be driving the S90 Excellence, it is still a true pleasure. Volvo gave the car its hybrid T8 powertrain that combines a turbo-charged four-cylinder with a rear-wheel electric motor. The front infotainment system is also ready for both Apply CarPlay and Android Auto.
While not fully autonomous, the S90 Excellence does come with Volvo’s Pilot Assist scheme, which is sort of like Tesla’s Autopilot since it controls acceleration, braking, and steering at speeds up to 81 mph.
