Mercedes-Benz is making another E-class, and this one packs the most punch of any of the automaker’s E series cars, with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that makes the E43’s six-cylinder look aless threatening. The new models in this tier are the E63 and E63 S.
Two twin-scroll turbochargers add to the power, boosting the base E63 model up to 563 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque with a top speed of 155 mph and a zero-to-60 time of 3.4 seconds.
The E63 S, meanwhile, offers 603 horses and 627 pound-feet of torque from 2500 to 4500 rpm. It reaches 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and tops out at 186 mph.
Both models come with a nine-speed automatic transmission with a wet starting clutch in lieu of a torque converter and a new all-wheel-drive system, 4MATIC+. There’s also a Drift Mode—standard on the S model; optional on the base—that allows for sending 100 percent of the torque to the car’s back wheels.
A limited-slip rear differential and optional carbon-ceramic brakes help keep things safe, while the air-sprung suspension and dynamic engine mounts ensure a smooth ride.
This version also brings a new front end featuring a sporty grille and expanded fenders and adds a spoiler to the rear.
