Hamilton the musical may be at the top of the world right now, but Hamilton the man was unfortunately no match for the third Vice-President of the United States, Aaron Burr. Burr famously killed Hamilton in a duel over comments the former Treasury Secretary made in an article during Burr’s New York gubernatorial run in 1804.
Now, a West Village townhouse on a property Burr owned has gone on the market for $5.75 million. The home, built in 1830—well after the deadly duel—includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms across 2,200 square feet of interior spaces with plenty of rustic-classical elements, including its wrought iron fence, wide plank hardwood floors, carved wood columns, fireplaces in stone, brick and polished wood arched French doors and a back patio with herringbone brickwork.
A plaque outdoors commemorates the third Vice-President by dubbing the home “Aaron Burr House” though it’s been reported that Burr never actually lived there.
A large dining room sits on the garden level, while the living room sits on the main level overlooking the back courtyard and the bedrooms take up the upper floors of the home.
The red-brick Federal sits on the quiet Commerce Street, right around the corner from foodie haven Murray’s Cheese Shop and just next door to the highly regarded Sushi Nakazawa, whose principle owner, Daisuke Nakazawa, was featured in the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi.
