When Andrew Davidge began building electric bicycles from his parents’ garage with some of his friends four years ago, he probably didn’t realize he’d soon be running a Silicon Valley company with over a dozen employees and a factory in Santa Clara, California.

But this is now exactly the case with his Vintage Electric e-bikes selling all over the world from America to England to New Zealand.

While the Vintage Electric Scrambler won’t exactly replace a Harley-Davidson, it does offer riders a lightweight option to ride around town or even dirt roads, at speeds ranging from 20 to 40 mph.

The e-bike’s 702 watt-hour lithium battery is protected by a sand cast aluminum battery box made in nearby San Jose. It’s mounted on a hydroformed aluminum frame and can be fully recharged in only about two hours.

Regenerative braking also helps restore power to the battery to extend the Scrambler’s range from 35 miles in the up-to-20-mph Steet Mode. There is also a Race Mode that juices the e-bike to speeds of up to 40 mph.

Other features on the Scrambler include a Shimano Alfine hydraulic braking system, custom forks from MRP, and Schwalbe Black Jack tires that are Kevlar reinforced. Not one to cut corners, Vintage Electric has sourced the leather grips and saddle from Brooks England.

The street-legal Vintage Electric Scrambler costs $6,995 and serves as a cheaper alternative for getting around, even if you don’t have a license.
