The splendid Malibu estate of Carroll O’Connor—the late actor known best for his portrayal of Archie Bunker, the reactionary patriarch of the Bunker clan on CBS’s ‘70s sitcom All in the Family—sold for $9.3 million last week, 15 years after the actor died of a heart attack.
Constructed in 1974, the oceanfront home on Malibu’s Broad Beach is surprising for its elegant mixture of Moorish and Mediterranean influences, with latticed arches subtly imprinted into the white façade and a copper-green terra cotta roof.
An inner courtyard includes a loggia, white and green chevron-patterned tiles and a swimming pool, while the upper-level balcony includes an ornate stone railing and takes in the property’s 42 feet of ocean frontage.
All told, the home includes 3,600 square feet of living space, with three bedrooms, four bathrooms, formal living and dining rooms and a sauna. Arched passageways, French doors and even fireplaces are visible in nearly every room, and the galley kitchen includes a pair of sinks, a uniquely tiled bar top and wall-to-wall reddish cabinetry.
O’Connor won four Emmys for his portrayal of Bunker, going on to star in the spinoff series, Archie Bunker’s Place. He also held the lead role in the NBC drama In the Heat of the Night.
His wife, Nancy Fields O’Connor, continued to live in the house until her death in 2004.
