Media magnate David Geffen is trying to unload a large co-op this week. With over 5,000 square feet of interior space, views of Central Park’s south side and the Plaza Hotel, and a design by “New York Five” architect Charles Gwathmey, the $27.5 million price tag on the two-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath actually makes it something of a deal.
Geffen bought the property for $14.17 million in 2010, employing Los Angeles-based designer Rose Tarlow to decorate. The nearly 1,200-square-foot central room includes a formal living space with seating for ten, blonde built-in shelves beneath the ceiling-height windows and a pair of tables at either end: one for dining and one with lounge seating.
Off the separate chef’s kitchen, which includes stainless steel cabinets and top-of-the-line appliances, is another dining nook with a blonde table and single-stemmed acrylic chairs.
Built-in shelves in the master bedroom include a television, while a canted desk overlooks the park, and a large built-in closet features a center dresser. A similar set-up in the guest room eschews most of the wall shelving for another window—potentially an upgrade, given the view—and mixes in a smaller desk. No walk-in closet, unfortunately, but it does feature a larger bathroom than the master suite.
Geffen, who co-founded Dreamworks and is reportedly worth $6.6 billion, will be moving into the 12,000-square-foot penthouse he purchased in 2012 from singer-songwriter and society queen Denise Rich for a then-record-setting $54 million. Geffen’s extensive renovations landed him some bad press earlier this year when neighbors at the Parc V building complained of excessive noise and cracking walls.
