For designer Alexandre Chapelin of LA Table, every perfect table must fit three criteria: it must be unique, artistic, and visually appealing. Or in the artist’s own words, “[it] must have a story, a soul, and something to tell. It has to be contemporary and surprising.” Chapelin’s latest design, the Stone and Resin Coffee Table, certainly fits the bill.
The story of this table begins with its striking base of natural stone, carved to replicate Earth’s plateaus and cliff sides as they plunge beneath sea level—specifically the island of St. Martin in the French West Indies. The holes and crevices in the stone are filled in with a brilliant aquamarine resin. The result? A stunning table that looks like the ocean viewed from an airplane.
In his prior Lagoon series, Chapelin likewise celebrated the beauty of the planet’s oceans, and this distinctive piece is yet another aesthetic study in oceanography. It manages to be both tranquil and raw, and will definitely be a conversation piece in whatever room it’s set in.
