Frank Zappa, the experimental rocker who put out more than 60 albums in his illustrious career, may have died in 1993, but his family held on to his Hollywood Hills West estate until very recently. The Laurel Canyon Tudor that Zappa first purchased for $74,000 in the ‘60s was sold last week for a reported $5.25 million, a hair under the $5.49 million asking price.

Sitting on a half-acre property, the 1930s-built home has some whimsical touches, though it may not be as daring as you’d expect from the man who named his children Dweezil and Moon Unit. Herringbone brickwork joins half-timber and cobblestone elements on the façade for a classical English look, while exposed beams, cathedral ceilings, wood paneling and hardwood floors give a cozily cabin-esque vibe to the interior.

In addition to the expected living spaces—a country kitchen and formal dining area, a window-walled living room, seven bedrooms and six bathrooms among them—the home also features a full recording studio, a rehearsal space and a climate-controlled vault where Zappa kept a collection of film and music recordings.

The yard fits a number of patios, a swimming pool with spa and a stone courtyard, and there’s even a rooftop tennis court. Also on the property are two guest cottages and a guest apartment attached to the main house.

Zappa was part of the first class inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. In addition to the 60 albums he put out during his lifetime, another 40 have been released posthumously. The most recent release with his name attached was last year’s “200 Motels: The Suites,” a collection of Zappa’s compositions performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
