Christopher Duffy got his start designing furniture and products in his kitchen. But since those halcyon days of the early-aughts, Duffy London has migrated to the outdoors for inspiration. See: the Surf-Ace Table and Bench Set, a limited-edition set made of balsa wood and constructed via traditional surfboard manufacturing techniques.
Traditionally, wood has been the material used in the creation of surfboards, dating back to the ancient Hawaiians. Operating now out of their spacious east London studio, Duffy London has modernized the traditional surfboard, reimagining it as a totemic furniture item. The sumptuous curves of the table and benches are created by carving and shaping the sustainably sourced balsa wood to the desired proportions, before it is stained, laminated, and finished. The thin planes of the pieces bear a long silhouette—it looks as if you could take them straight to the waves and surf off into the sunset after dinner.
“Life is about catching the right waves and riding them as long as you can,” Duffy has said. These pieces have a strong, holistic visual language that plays with geometry and comments on history while maintaining an effortless functionality. The entire set costs £18,000, or about $24,000.
