More than fifty years after its creation, Carl Hansen & Son has revived one of Hans J. Wegner’s early designs: the 1950 CH22 lounge chair.
Considered one of the most influential furniture designers in the history Denmark—a country whose interior design pedigree needs no introduction—Wegner developed a reputation for remarkably well-made pieces. The mid-century modern designer’s work became recognized worldwide and is still valued today.
The newly built 1950 CH22 pays tribute to the simplicity and craftsmanship of Wegner’s creations, honoring the artist’s talent for designing and building wooden furniture.
What makes the new chair even more special is the fact that the CH22 was the first model in Wegner’s debut collection that was developed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Son in 1950. Like Wegner’s other designs of the period, the chair sports a simple construction and a sleek, streamlined aesthetic.
“The story of Wegner and Carl Hansen & Son’s collaboration dates back to 1949, when Wegner and my father, Holger Hansen, formed a partnership to manufacture a series of chairs. Both had trained as cabinetmakers, and where Wegner focused on design, my dad was the businessman who focused on sales, and particularly on global exports,” said Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son.
