Comedian Howie Mandel rose to stardom after his turn on the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere, going on to create and star in the children’s television show Bobby’s World, but he’s perhaps best known as the host of NBC’s game show Deal or No Deal. Well, the Canadian-American comic has been making deals of his own, nabbing two separate Santa Monica condos in off-market purchases totaling $4 million.
The industrial-style homes include plenty of steel, with stainless kitchens and crossed-beam walls sheathed in glass, as well as rafter-style columns jutting into the living areas. The larger of the two pads includes 14-foot ceilings and a wall of windows as well as a brick backsplash in the kitchen off the open-plan living/dining area. A lofted den/office, which features wire railings and a contemporary shelving unit of stainless steel and wood, leads to the home’s two bedrooms and a pair of bathrooms. All told, the unit includes 1,900 square feet of living area.
The ground-floor unit is a bit smaller, at 1,450 square feet, and includes mahogany floors and a hedged patio next to two storage units and side-by-side parking.
The thoroughly unique building was designed by William Dale Brantley of the aArts architecture firm. Mandel also owns a two-story penthouse in the building, which includes a private elevator and a full-story private garden. That purchase, also completed off-market, cost the funnyman $5.3 million.
Mandel, who suffers from mysophobia—an irrational fear of germs—must be excited to add to his collection of stainless steel accouterments. Because of its non-porous surface, stainless steel is famously bacteria-resistant.
