With its aqua-tinted fireplace, lion and palm tree murals and a subtly patterned exterior, Antonio Gates’s Hollywood Hills home is anything but ordinary. Then again, Gates himself is quite the outlier.
The eight-time pro bowler is one of just two tight ends in NFL history to lead his team in career receiving yards, and he also happens to have the Chargers’ records for receptions and receiving touchdowns to boot, but the 36-year-old veteran will be looking for a new place to rest his head during his 14th NFL season. He has just listed his four-story contemporary for $3 million.
The 4,400-square-foot home features formal living and dining rooms; a large, tile-walled kitchen with a six-burner stove, a wine cooler and contemporary cabinetry with elongated pulls; five bedrooms; four-and-a-half bathrooms and a myriad of splashy accents: a spiralized chandelier in the foyer, a textured accent wall and an ivy-covered upper deck by the pool and spa.
Some of the more usual amenities include multiple seating areas on the terrace patio, a fire pit, an elevator, a lofted media center, a master suite with a large sitting area, a small office and bathrooms with frameless showers.
Gates bought the home two years ago for $1.66 million and has had it renovated. Earlier this year, he signed a two-year contract extension with the Chargers that will keep him playing in San Diego until the end of next season—that is, unless the Chargers end up scootching up to join the Rams in Los Angeles, a distinct possibility if they’re not granted a new stadium in a November ballot initiative.
