Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 was introduced as an alternative to Apple’s iPad or Macbook, but now the popular device is trying to further assert its dominance with an Alcantara fabric surface.
The luxury fabric is paired with metal to elevate the high-powered computer to a luxury level. Microsoft Corp. designer Rachael Bell upgraded the Surface’s cover with the Italian-made fabric for its luxe look, which explains why it’s often incorporated in high-end vehicles and products.
While most laptops sport a plastic top or metallic cover, it lends to an unoriginal look, making most laptops appear almost all the same. Bell wanted to move away from the hard edge and opted to make a premium cover in a two-tone gray mélange color for a softer and more luxurious look.
“Fabric is comforting. It’s a reassuring sense of coziness,” said Bell. But that unique design took time to develop with one-and-a-half years spent engineering the material. “It’s like tailoring a nice jacket. You don’t want to force a material to do something it doesn’t want to do.”
Microsoft’s premium upgrade is available for $159, and while most textiles fade, Alcantara ages like leather and is a dense and durable fiber.
