Garage Italia is known for creating custom vehicles, but now the design center has transformed an Alfa Romeo into a truly unique new vehicle that pays tribute to Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.
Hokusai was best known as a printmaker and painter of the Edo period in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Now one of the world’s greatest automakers is celebrating the classic painter’s work by hand painting “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” on the body of an Alfa Romeo.
The beautiful painting demands respect while establishing a sense of greatness and strength in nature. Large waves are contrasted with fishing boats to remind viewers of the fragility of humanity and the powerful forces of the earth.
That large wave is perfectly placed on the entire side of the car and the roof’s surface, while additional wave and water details cover the front and back of the vehicle. The interior look has also been customized with kurabo denim and koi patterned cream foglizzo leather, which were chosen as a tribute to the art of wrapping the handles of samurai swords.
Since the Alfa Romeo is beloved by Japanese car fans, it makes perfect sense that the Italian vehicle has become such a special canvas to honor what many consider to be one of the greatest artists of all time.
