The former Hollywood Hills home of late Oscar-winner Marlon Brando has been sold for a reported $2.73 million. The home, which was designed by Paul Williams, the first African-American architect certified west of the Mississippi who made a career designing homes for celebrities such as Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, Frank Sinatra and Lon Chaney. It was first built in 1939 and has been flawlessly preserved over the years.

Brando first purchased the home in the early 1950s and made it famous as a Hollywood hangout before it eventually became a yoga studio frequented by the likes of Actors Stacy Keach and Tina Louise, as well as singers Carole King and James Taylor.

The home eventually came to be owned by a number of other Hollywood players: actress Barbara Hershey lived there for a time, as did the gonzo rock star Frank Zappa and kung fu actor David Carradine.

The gated L.A. traditional sits on two-thirds of an acre and includes six bedrooms and five baths in its more than 4,000 square feet of interior space. Located on the lushly forested Benda Place, the home’s well-landscaped backyard features a dense smattering of mature bamboos, in addition to a pool, a spa and a multi-tier fountain.

A formal dining room is topped by a classic chandelier, while the front living room includes a brickwork fireplace and glass ceiling-height windows that in the sunroom’s ample light. The stainless appliances in the updated kitchen include a six-burner stove, while a second-level patio sits off the en suite master bedroom. A home office sports another fireplace as well as a built-in shelf that reveals a hidden room—a throwback to the house’s Prohibition-era construction.

Last sold in 2007 for $2.15 million, the home was originally listed for $2.995 million this time around.
