Among Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s impressive holdings are six NBA championship rings and a record six Most Valuable Player Awards, but if the 20-year NBA veteran has his way, he’ll soon be lightening his load. The man who made the skyhook famous has listed his harbor-view multi-level in the gated Marina del Rey community for a hair under $3 million.
The 3,200 square feet of interior space includes formal living and dining rooms, an open-plan kitchen with an island, decorative columns, marble floors and vaulted ceilings, which must have been a selling point for the 7-foot-2 former center.
The home’s master suite is a standout, with a sitting area, a spacious balcony, a walk-in closet and a fireplace. An office with built-in shelving and a family room are among the house’s other common areas. Built in 2000 and remodeled since then, the home also includes a paver patio with garden area, a two-car garage and another legendary sports figure for a neighbor: former Chicago Cubs infielder Ernie Banks.
Born in New York City in 1947, Lew Alcindor changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar one day after winning his first NBA Championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969. After being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975, Abdul-Jabbar became the bedrock of perhaps the NBA’s greatest dynasty, pairing with point guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson to bring the team five championships.
With 38,387 career points, Abdul-Jabbar holds the all-time NBA scoring record. In 1995, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
