Japanese automaker Toyota has announced that it will be resurrecting the Supra for 2018.
The Supra was first introduced in 1978 as a Celica offshoot, but it quickly became one of the brand’s most popular vehicles before it was eventually discontinued in 2012.
However, back in 2014, Toyota unveiled its FT-1 at the Detroit Auto Show, and the Calty Design Research-made vehicle was recognized as a successor of sorts to the retired Supra coupe. The F-1’s introduction also hinted at future cars with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive setup.
Now, fans of the Supra will be happy to see that Toyota’s looking to make it up to fans with a new Supra based upon the build of the FT-1. Said to only return for a few years, the new Supra will be positioned above the 86 in Toyota’s lineup and will likely sport more powerful specs and advanced tech than the rebadged Scion FR-S with a decidedly more aggressive exterior look.
It’s possible the new Supra might borrow even more style cues from the FT-1 with a sleek, retractable rear wing for increased downforce.
