News broke last week that haute couture fashion house Balmain has been sold to a Qatari sovereign wealth fund. The purchase will have some big distribution implications for the French label.
“We are going to expand Balmain to the world. It’s something I’m really happy for and I can’t wait,” said wunderkind Creative Director Olivier Rousteing in Vogue recently.
Whether news broke early in-house or the 30-year-old couturier just happened to presage the feeling at Balmain this summer, Rousteing delivered a ferociously jubilant collection of flowing dresses, evening gowns and minis.
Inspired by the work of iconic fashion photographer Guy Bourdin, the collection has a bold, ‘70s vintage feel, with ruffled bell bottoms, off-shoulder dresses and chunky patterns and accessories. Crocheted and macramé pieces rescue seventies patterning from the dinge bin with a vibrant, international color palette and crepe-satin numbers included a late night color scheme of deep purples, oranges and forest green.
Glittering, hand-beaded gowns are the eveningwear standouts, but the line’s vibe is dominated by relaxed pieces: oversized satin jackets, flowing dresses and sun-hued robes. Denim even rears its head occasionally, in the form of a boxy tunic or the fringe to a sheer pantsuit.
The implications of Balmain’s 2017 Resort collection are clear: easy living ahead.
