Now that Volvo has completed the reveal of its most recent large cars, the Swedish automaker has turned its attention to unveiling its new range of more compact vehicles.
The new “40” series isn’t set to appear until 2017, but to spike the interest of potential buyers, Volvo has introduced a pair of concepts to serve as a preview of what is to come.
The two concepts are a crossover SUV and a sedan, which offer a look at the new XC40 and S40 models, respectively. The new generation of Volvo’s compact car lineup will also feature a replacement for the V40 hatchback, but a concept hasn’t yet been revealed.
The two concepts are based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform Volvo developed with its parent company, Geely. The CMA boasts advanced tech in facets like autonomous driving, connectivity, dynamics, and electrification.
The new compact series will come with 3- and 4-cylinder engines along with alternative power source options. The most effective of the engine alternatives will be the T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid.
Even better, Volvo will offer the models in the United States for the first time since the Swedish manufacturer dropped the C30 from its stateside offerings back in 2012.
