American history fans should reach for their checkbooks because the home once belonging to former United States President James Madison and his wife, Dolley, has been listed for $3.2 million.
The Federal-style townhouse located in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia has been renovated and modernized to accommodate for an open floor plan, which would never have been an option in an early American-era home because the heating costs would have been extraordinary.
The four-bedroom, four-bathroom home offers a rooftop deck, a sunken hot tub, a walled garden on the ground level, and a New Orleans-style porch on the second level. And though the current owners scooped up the property for $1.9 million back in 2007, it’s the home’s revolutionary owners who have given the property such a prestigious reputation.
The house served as the first home for James and Dolley Madison, who lived in the property from 1794 to 1797—the first three years of their marriage. Madison became the nation’s fourth president in 1808.
