E-bikes are becoming more and more popular, so it should come as no surprise that each iteration introduces more advanced features. VanMoof’s new SmartBike does exactly that with a bevy of technical additions and improvements.
The SmartBike may not have an electric motor, but it does add other features of value that make riding a bike much more enjoyable.
The Dutch bike manufacturer may have found success with the unveiling of the Electrified S, but the SmartBike includes features like a speed-displaying LED touchscreen built into the top tube and an advanced electronic locking mechanism that makes the bike more resistant to theft.
The bike uses a chain lock with an electronic mechanism. This means users can unlock the bike using a wireless remote, their smartphone, or the bike’s built-in screen. If the bike is somehow stolen, a tracking system lets owners track down its whereabouts using an app.
VanMoof is so sure that their bike is secure that they’ll replace any bike that can’t be reclaimed within two weeks using their advanced features. The bike also sports head- and taillights that come on automatically and anti-theft bolts.
Weighing in at under 30 lbs with either a 3- or 8-speed Sturmey Archer rear hub transmission, customers can preorder the SmartBike starting at $1,098, but that price will increase to $1,798 starting in December when it makes its retail debut.
