The first line created under the direction of new art director, Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, called Origins of the Future is both a dedication to the ever-changing trends of the furniture world and the nearly 90-year history of Italian brand Cassina.
The new Cassina collection includes designs from the likes of Philippe Starck, Charlotte Perriand, Rodolfo Dordoni, Konstant Grcic, Ora ïto, and even the late Zaha Hadid.
Urquiola even designed two of the items for the new line herself: an armchair called Gender and a sofa dubbed Beam. The armchair consists of both masculine and feminine shapes and features a changing identity with different material combinations.
“I’m very encouraged to see which the public will understand more, feminine or masculine,” said Urquiola. “I think it’s time to blend gender. There are many sides to society, not only woman and man, and we have to approach these situations in a better way.”
Cassina’s Origins of the Future line made its debut at the 2016 Salone del Mobile furniture expo in Milan, Italy, last month.
