Janne Kyttanen has added to his explosion welding collection of furniture with two new pieces displayed at the Collective Design Fair, which was part of the NYCxDesign Festival that ran from early to middle May.
Kyttanen’s new side table and shelf join his previous Metsidian table that was shown off at last year’s Design Miami event.
The Finnish designer takes 3D-printed copper mesh and volcanic obsidian and puts the two materials through a process called explosion welding. This process uses chemical explosives to meld the materials, which couldn’t be bonded together through conventional welding.
“[These] are dynamic works that represent a moment in time—an eruption that melds two divergent materials together,” Kyttanen said about his Metsidian pieces.
The three Metsidian items are just part of a grander exhibit of Kyttanen’s works in the Collective Design Fair. Other pieces include his infinite-spiraled Rollercoaster tables that come in a sandblasted champagne finish and his woven polished aluminum Sedona dining table.
