Piero Lissoni has designed a chic new sofa system that can be adjusted and reinterpreted for any space. The unique Avio Sofa is a linear and modular piece with a light structure that made its debut at Salone del Mobile 2016.
Created to fit in any setting, the sofa is ultra functional with a slim structural framework and voluminous seat cushions. Designed for Florence Knoll, the piece is made from steel beams that are connected through a series of brackets that allows for a variety of uses and configurations.
Avio features a load-bearing structure with a steel beam that acts as a sort of spine for the tables, backs, and seats and allows for the system to become a bench, sofa for two or three, a chaise lounge, and can even convert into tabletops with corner configurations.
“This is a true industrial project of great complexity,” said Lissoni. “In practice, it is a product that changes the traditional idea of upholstered furniture, taking the form of a technological and aesthetic alphabet to assemble in different compositions for different needs.”
Lissoni designed the complex piece in honor of great designers who’ve inspired him like Eero Saarinen and Florence Knoll and plans to expand with new elements to increase versatility and range.
