Danish designer Hans J Wegner’s CH22 lounge chair was part of his debut collection for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950, and now the iconic piece is being reintroduced. As one of the first pieces Wegner designed for the Danish company, it’s no surprise that the chic chair is making a comeback.
Originally released alongside models like the bold CH24, known as the Wishbone chair or the Y Chair, the new CH22 has been manufactured to Wegner’s original specs and is a low armchair made of solid wood.
Flat armrests with rounded edges meet with the designer’s characteristic curving supports and a handwoven seat made from paper cord to create a truly unique chair. The backrest is made from form-pressed wood veneer and sports oblong cover caps for the joint between the back and frame.
“The CH22’s complex, intricately detailed construction may explain why the lounge chair has long been out of production,” said Carl Hansen & Søn. “Today, while parts of the production process have been modernised, the chair is still manufactured as it was more than six decades ago.”
The CH22 and Wegner’s dining chair, model number CH26, come in walnut and solid oak in various finishes, and the seat is available in black paper cord or natural.
